Health Concerns

Examination of almost every back packers pack will reveal the popular Lexan (#7) Nalgene water bottle once considered safe. Now evidence show's trace amounts of BPA (Bisphenol) leak out of the small cracks and bruise marks that form over years of use. BPA has been shown to interfere with the body’s natural hormonal messaging system and studies have shown a connection to breast and uterine cancer, an increased risk of miscarriage, decreased testosterone levels and issues in children’s developing systems. BTW it should be noted BPA is also found in those sippy cups AND most baby bottles.

The bottled water on every store shelf (including sodas and juice) are from plastic #1 (polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET or PETE), have been shown to leach another carcinogen called DEHP.

Environmental Concerns

• 1.5 million barrels of oil are used to make water bottles in the U.S. each year.
• Bottled water also requires oil for shipping, refrigerating, and even recycling.
• 86% of plastic bottles in the U.S. end up in a landfill or incinerator.
• More than 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills and incinerators every day — 22 billion a year.
• Water quality standards set by the EPA for tap water are more stringent than the FDA’s standards for bottled water.
• Ounce for ounce, bottled water costs more than gasoline.
